I am a freelance video editor
Bringing ideas to life
Whether you are looking for a promotional video for a product, a corporate or educational video or even just a way to make your website more interesting,
It Starts with an idea..
And grows from there
If you are just considering that a video may be a good idea to help your business, but you don’t know where to start, below is the process that we would follow.
If you are considering a video, then contact me and we can set up a video call. In this call we can get to know eachother a bit. I will want to know what the overall drive is for this video. Why do you want a video? What is it for? Where will you use this video?
We can discuss your business, your competition and other ideas you may have and we can even go and look at some other videos that may be similar to what you are looking for.
I will likely give some ideas at this point as when I have them, I want to share them. I also want to know where your head is at and if I am thinking along the same lines as you are. Then when we finish this meeting, I can start preparing a quote for the project.
During our call, we likely talked about your budget. There are lots of different solutions I can offer and they are budget dependant.
So if you are looking for the “budget” approach, then I will quote on that approach. But, fi you are looking to see the difference between the “budget” approach and the “ferrari” approach, I can offer you both so that you will have a comparison.
I can also offer a range of cost that will cover both the “budget” and the “ferrari” approach and then we can narrow down that range to something you are comfortable with.
My quote will outline in detail what I am providing and if you want, I can provide one set-cost so you know exactly what you will be spending and exactly what you are getting.
I will provide a timeline in my quote and I do ask for a partial deposit. Once the quote is approved and the deposit is recieved, the work will begin.
This can be done in many ways. Often, my clients will come to me with a general outline of what they want and I will come back to them with a script. My script takes their content but adapts it for the screen.
Sometimes, my clients have no idea what they want in terms of a script and there is a lot to learn about their business in order to come up with even an idea for the script. In this scenario, I may call on a writer contact that I work with. Her job is to interview the client or other players in the business to find out what the product or promotion is. She will then come to me with ideas for a script and we can write the script together.
I want to make sure that I am 100% clear with my client is looking for so often times, I will put together detailed storyboards to outline the video. These will contain the script and note the action and cutaways used. These can be as detailed as my client wants and we will go back and forth with them until my client is happy.
During this stage, I will organize the footage. This may involve logging footage that has been provided to me or curating clips from my online “royalty-free” libraries of stock footage. I create folders for the video, audio and graphics so that I am working in an organized fashion.
A big strength that I have as a video editor is that I am also a designer. Sometimes on video jobs, you will have one person designing all of the frames and passing the graphics to an editor. Because I am a designer, we don’t need this step. I will design the initial frames in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator but once I am in the editing process, I will try to do most of my design in the actual video editing program – Adobe Premiere. This elminates a lot of time but I generally only start doing this once the look/feel has been established.
Usually, I will edit a parital clip fully, with sound effects and full graphics to get my client’s approval on the overall feel of the piece. This is called a “rough cut”.
This is my client’s opportunity to give full feedback and if they don’t like the direction, this is the time to change it. I have never had this happen before as when I get to this point, I am always crystal clear with what my client is looking for. Once the Client approves this cut, I will work on editing the whole piece.
Whatever was “rough” in the first cut will now be tightened up and b-roll or cutaways will be added. The client will be supplied a full edited piece for final approval.
Because of my background in building websites, I can help advise my clients on the best way to display their videos for online viewing. I will compress and upload the videos for whatever medium my clients want to display their videos on (Youtube, Vimeo, TikTok, Instagram etc). I can also provide a download of the full (non-compressed) video for future use, on request.
