Hiring a Freelance Website Designer vs. DIY: What’s Right for Your Business?

Hiring a Freelance Website Designer vs. DIY: What’s Right for Your Business?

When it comes to building a website for your business, side hustle, or personal brand, you’re faced with a big decision: should you hire a freelance website designer or roll up your sleeves and learn how to design it yourself?

With so many website builders and tutorials available today, it’s tempting to think you can go the DIY route and save money. But is that always the best move? Let’s break down the benefits of hiring a freelance web designer compared to learning the software yourself.

Expertise vs. Learning Curve

A freelance web designer brings years of experience, a trained eye for design, and technical skills to your project. They’ve already made the mistakes, solved the problems, and know what works. You get a polished, professional site, without having to go through the trial and error yourself.

Learning website design takes time, and lots of it. You’ll need to become familiar with platforms like WordPress, Squarespace, or Webflow, as well as understand SEO basics, user experience (UX) design, and mobile responsiveness. It can be rewarding, but it’s not a quick process.

Cost Efficiency in the Long Run

While hiring a freelancer comes with an upfront cost, it can actually save you money over time. A well-designed site is more likely to attract and retain visitors, convert customers, and require fewer fixes down the road.

It’s better to do it right, the first time.

Doing it yourself may be cheaper upfront, but can lead to hidden costs: time lost, poor performance, lower conversion rates, and the risk of needing to hire a professional anyway to fix or improve the site later.

Time Savings

Time is money and this is especially true for entrepreneurs and small business owners. A freelancer can take your vision and turn it into a live website in weeks (sometimes days), while you stay focused on running your business.

Building your own website can take hours, weeks, or even months depending on your schedule and how quickly you learn. If your time is better spent elsewhere, the DIY path may cost you more than you think.

Strategy & Customization

A good designer does more than make things look pretty. They create a strategic layout based on your goals. They’ll think about your customer journey, calls-to-action, and how to make your site align with your brand.

Most website builders offer templates, but these can be limiting. Without design experience, it’s easy to end up with a site that looks generic, doesn’t function well, or doesn’t support your business objectives.

Ongoing Support

Many freelancers offer ongoing support, updates, and maintenance packages. If something breaks, they’re just an email away. This kind of relationship can be invaluable as your site grows.

You’re on your own. That means learning how to troubleshoot issues, keep plugins updated, and navigate customer support. For some, this is fine—but it’s not for everyone.

So… Should You DIY or Hire a Freelancer?

If you’re a hobbyist or have the time and passion to learn, building your own website can be a great project. But if your priority is launching a professional, high-performing site without the tech stress, hiring a freelance website designer is often the smarter, faster, and ultimately more cost-effective route.

In the end, the right choice comes down to your goals, timeline, budget, and willingness to learn. Whichever path you take, the most important thing is to get your site online and working for you.

I am trying to learn WordPress and like you mentionned, I am finding it very difficult. Do you suggest that I use another platform like Wix?

I agree that hiring a freelancer is the best method for most companies and for all of the reasons you listed. However, we hired a freelancer to work on our website but then they disappeared. We are now in the situation where we need to find a reliable freelancer to take on our project and we need one with lots of knowledge of different plugins as we have tried two junior level freelancers and they cannot figure out what was done. Can you please contact me at the email listed to discuss this project?
